How to Make a Bead Dangle with Artistic Wire

The head pins used in making these earrings can be made out of Artistic Wire.  The process used to make a head pin and bead dangle with a spiral bottom is described below.  The following web page will provide the instructions for making a head pin with a hammered bottom.

Step 1:  Cut and straighten a 1 1/2" long segment of 20 gauge wire.

Step 2:  Make a small loop in one end of the wire.

Step 3:  Using your bent chain nose pliers grasp the loop and continue wrapping the wire around the loop.  Wrap in small segments of about 60 degrees at a time. Continue the wrap until you have two full revolutions of wire.

Step 4:  Using your bent chain nose pliers grasp the wire at the top of the spiral and bend it up.  The wire should be centered on the spiral when you are done.

Step 5:  Thread your 6mm bead on the wire and slide it down so that it rests on top of the spiral.

Step 6:  While holding the wire so that you can see the full spiral (not just the edge of the spiral), grasp the wire on top of the bead and bend it back.  After the bend, the wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 7:  Using your round nose pliers, reorient the piece so that you can grasp the wire at the bend you made in step 6, but on the horizontal wire segment.  Make a loop in the wire at this point.  This is a two step process as you will need to reposition and re-grip the wire in your round nose pliers in order to complete the loop.

Step 8:  Cut the excess wire making sure that the flat side of your flush cutter is toward the finished piece.  Close the loop that you just completed.
