![]() This project is making an earring using a modified spiral link wire component. This will essentially be 1/2 of the spiral link wire component that we made in the prior pages. One of our goals in making this wire component is to make a spiral shaped component that won't pull apart. The test we like to apply is -- if a baby were to grab the earrings, would they pull apart. With this as a goal, a simple spiral won't make acceptable earrings, the design for a simple spiral needs to be modified so that it will be permanent. In the below jewelry making instructions we will show to make a permanent spiral dangle wire component. Jewelry Making Supplies Required: 16 inches of 18 gauge soft wire. 10 inches of 20 gauge soft wire. Two commercial head pins. Four 6mm or 8mm beads. One pair of commercial ear wire or 6 inches of 20 gauge wire to make an ear wire. Jewelry Tools Required: WigJig Spiral Maker and matching WigJig jewelry making jig; one flush cutter, one round nose pliers, two bent chain nose pliers, one nylon jaw pliers and one ruler. Step 1A: Using nylon jaw pliers, straighten 8 inches of 18 gauge soft wire before you cut it from the spool. Step 2A: Using your flush cutter, cut an 8 inch length of this 18 gauge wire.
Step 4A: Using your round nose pliers, your WigJig Spiral Maker and your WigJig Jewelry Making Jig, make a spiral as shown in steps 4, 5, 6 and 7 on page 2. Continue making the spiral until you have about 1 3/4" of unused wire at the end of the spiral. Your spiral should appear as shown at right.
