Step 12 to Advanced Beginner's Jewelry Wire Catch Jewelry Making Finding Step 1

Step 12:  We need to bend this short segment of wire down so that it is parallel with the wire that went to and from peg 3.  We do this by inserting one jaw of our bent chain nose pliers into the two loops with the second jaw on the outside of the two loops.  In the picture shown at right, the second jaw of your pliers would be above the two loops and as close as possible to the tongue of wire that went to and from peg 3.  With your pliers in that position, bend the short wire segment down so that it is in the position shown at right.

Step 13 to Jewelry Wire Clasp Jewelry Making TechniqueStep 13:  Now we are ready to wrap the wire tail around the tongue of wire to and from peg 3.  To do this, you place the round jaw of your fine step jaw pliers in the two loops, with the flat jaw outside the loops.  Grasp the wire firmly in your pliers and wrap the wire around about 4-5 times.  If you have excess wire, cut the excess wire so that the wire end is positioned on the bottom of the wire component, with the component orientated as shown above-left.  Using your bent chain nose pliers, squeeze the cut end of the wire flat.

Step 14 to Jewelry Wire Clasp Jewelry Making TechniqueStep 14:  The finished clasp will be more esthetically pleasing if the two loops are centered on the wire tongue.  To do this, we place one jaw of our round nose pliers into the two loops, and the second jaw, above the loops at the point where they contact the tongue of wire.  Grasp the wire component firmly and twist your pliers so that the loops are centered as shown at right.Step 15 to Jewelry Wire Clasp Jewelry Making Technique

Step 15:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, grasp the tongue of wire about 1/8"Step 16 to Jewelry Wire Clasp Jewelry Making Technique from the end and bend it up 45 degrees as shown at left.

Step 16:  Using your bent chain nose pliers, bend the entire tongue up about 30 degrees as shown at left.  Step 17 to Jewelry Wire Clasp Jewelry Making Technique

Step 17:  We finish the hook portion of the clasp by using our fine step jaw pliers and bending the tongue of wire around the round jaw of the step jaw pliers into the position shown at left.

These instructions continue on the following next page with our directions for making the catch portion of the clasp.
