Step 1:  Cut and straighten a piece of 20G 1/2 hard gold-filled or sterling silver wire 3.5 inches long.

Step 2:  Measure 1 1/2 inches from the end of the wire with the flush cut.  Grasp the wire at this point with your bent chain nose pliers and make a right angle bend as shown at right.

Step 3.  Grasp the wire at this bend (on the long segment) with your chain nose pliers.  Hold one side of the chain nose pliers flush against the 1 1/2 inch wire segment.  Push the wire down against the opposite side of the chain nose pliers.  We are using the width of the chain nose pliers to measure the length of the wire segment between the two bends.  Please note where you held the wire on the pliers so that when you make the next earring, you grasp it in the same place.  When done the wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 4:  Using your chain nose pliers, grasp the wire at the top, where it will ultimately go through the pierced ear, about 1/8 inch from the top.  Be sure to hold your chain nose pliers on the two wire ends near the top.  Bend both wire segments about 45 degrees.  See the picture at right for how the wire should appear.  Please note that the wire for step 4 is held in the picture at right angles to the picture above for step 3.
