WigJig Newsletter for April 13, 2003

We are continuing to improve our newsletter, so please feel free to provide feedback at custsrv@wigjig.com.

In our last e-mail we suggested that our readers consider giving to the USO to show support for our troops.  Now that we have soldiers, sailors, marines and airman coming back from the war injured or worse, we suggest that you consider giving to one or more military relief societies.  You can visit the relief society web site for the organization of your choice by selecting the name soldiers, sailors, marines or airman.  We plan on giving $1 for every order we receive during the last half of April to the Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society.

Please Help us!  We would like to add a page to our web site showing where and how to contact instructors who hold classes in how to use our WigJig Tools and wire.  If you know of anyone who would like to be included on a web page of folks having classes please send us an e-mail with the name, address, telephone number and e-mail address (if available) so that we can post that information.  Please send it to: <custsrv@wigjig.com>.

Our last tidbit is to inform all our customers that we anticipate a small price increase in our WigJig Olympus-Lite, WigJig Delphi and WigJig Cyclops during the month of May.  We haven't finalized the details but anticipate a price increase between $1 and $2 per jig.  We are sorry that we have to raise prices, but our supplier for the acrylic plastic that we use to make our jigs has raised his price to us.

FREE JEWELRY MAKING DESIGN:
With every newsletter we provide a free design from WigJig University to spur the creative juices.  This newsletter's free design is the Half-Moon Earrings shown at right.  These earrings were made using 20G gold-filled wire and one 6mm bead per earring.  The earrings can be made on any WigJig as long as you have a Super Pegs for that jig, preferably 1/2 inch or any larger size.  The earrings shown at right use two 6mm square Emerald Swarovski beads from our Internet store.  This project is rather easy.  After a little practice you should be able to make a pair of these earrings in about 15 minutes.  The instructions provided will show you how to make these earrings in one of several sizes according to the Super Peg you use.

The Pinwheel Necklace showcases the ability of the Spiral Maker Plus to combine a variety of wire colors with spirals for a dynamite look.

Jewelry Making Technique of the week:
Our WigJig University wire-working technique for this newsletter is the basic technique of using a WigJig to make wire components.  Here are some basic tips that may be review for many readers.

First, always start by cutting the wire to the length you need then straightening the wire.  Any imperfections in the wire when you start, will be imperfections in the finished product.  I personally pull the wire I am about to use through the jaws of my nylon jaw pliers several times to get it straight.  It is easier to straighten the wire if you put a loop in the end first, then pull the wire by holding onto this loop.

Second, keep the wire straight as you are wrapping it around the pegs.  I have tried doing this several ways and find that the way that works best for me is to hold the wire straight in my dominant hand while I turn the jig with my non-dominant hand.  To do this easily, it helps to position your jig on a smooth, somewhat slippery surface as you wrap your wire around the pegs.  This allows the jig to slide as you move it.  Concentrate on keeping the wire straight as you work.

Third, always plan on throwing away the first two to three of any wire component that you make.  Use practice wire and really practice.  Try different approaches with your practice wire to see what works best for you.  After you are comfortable making the piece in inexpensive wire, then graduate to your good stuff.

Through using these three simple steps -- straighten the wire before your start, keep the wire straight as you work by moving the jig and holding the wire, and practice with inexpensive wire until you get it right -- you should find that making wire components is relatively easy.

This WigJig jewelry making newsletter is provided as part of WigJig University.  We try to provide interesting jewelry projects using beads, jewelry wire and other jewelry supplies.  We hope that these pictures will provide you enough information for you to complete this project.  Some of the skills and jewelry making techniques have not been discussed here.  For beginners, we suggest that you visit our Beginners Start Here pages. These pages discuss the skills necessary for making jewelry in the detail that beginners need. We also suggest that beginners to jewelry making might need to visit the WigJig University College of Jewelry Making Techniques for additional information about some of the skills and techniques shown.

Most, but not all of the jewelry supplies shown here can be purchased in our WigJig store.  We try to have a complete selection of jewelry supplies in our store including chain, wire, glass beads, findings, watches, tools, etc.
