Design: With every newsletter we provide a new jewelry design from WigJig University to spur the creative juices. The new design for this newsletter is the design for the Treble Clef Earrings shown at right. These earrings are similar to our Money Earrings discussed above. Rather than do a new Money Earring, we decided to change the design slightly. The Money Earring design uses two Super Pegs the same size. This jewelry making design uses two Super Pegs in two different sizes. We call these earrings Treble Clef because of their similarity to the musical symbol -- the treble clef. I am not smart enough to tell anyone what the treble clef means in music. In earrings, it means a simple earring design made with 20 gauge soft wire, that can be completed in about 20 minutes. Please select either the picture or the name of these earrings at right to visit our instructions for how to make them. |

Jewelry Technique: This weeks jewelry technique is a discussion on how to use the new Argentium anti-tarnish sterling silver wire. We have discussed in past newsletters how this wire resists tarnish and when it does tarnish, the tarnish does not have the dark black characteristics of conventional sterling silver. We have a little more experience in using this silver wire and have discovered a few tips that make working with this wire easier. In fact, the middle of the three Treble Clef Earrings shown above was made with the new Argentium Sterling Silver wire. The Argentium Sterling Silver Wire has many advantages over conventional sterling silver. Unfortunately, in one respect it is similar to conventional sterling silver. The Argentium wire comes from the manufacturer with a light coating of tarnish. In this respect it is similar to most conventional sterling silver. You will find that you will get your best results using the new Argentium Sterling Silver if you wash the wire before you use it. This sounds silly, but is accurate. The tarnish on Argentium Sterling Silver wire is easily removed with soap and water. It doesn't require anything more complicated. Because it is easier to wash all the surfaces of the wire before you bend it into a jewelry components, we recommend that you wash the wire before you use it to make jewelry. We have tried a drop of dishwasher soap with some water on our finger tips and pulling the wire between our soapy fingertips several times. This worked well. You will want to wash all the surfaces of the wire. Our experience is that you won't need to scrub the wire. You won't need and abrasive pad, just five to ten seconds of rubbing with soap and water, enough to work up a lather. If you are making jewelry to sell, it is
important to have bright shiny pieces for your customers to view, so
you will want to wash your wire before you make your jewelry. If
you are making jewelry for yourself, another alternative may be to
shower with your jewelry on. ;-)
