WigJig News:

In our last two newsletters we discussed our all day class to be held in Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday, October 15th.  We have a few seats open for this class.   Details about this class can be viewed in our last newsletter here.  If you would like to sign up for this class, please send us and e-mail and include your telephone number and a suggested time to call.

In our February 27th newsletter we discussed a US charity that is supporting a missionary project in Haiti teaching Haitians how to make jewelry and helping to sell the finished products.  This charity now has a web site.  You can view information on their work and see the jewelry items that they have for sale here:

http://www.haiticrafts.com

We suggest that everyone visit their web site both to view their jewelry and to read the stories of the people who are making the jewelry.  Our understanding is that this project is helping the people involved to earn an income that is significantly above the national average for Haiti.  As the old saying goes, "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to make jewelry and you feed him for a lifetime".  ;-)

Finally, we are getting ready for the Lapidary Journal Bead Fest show in Fort Washington, PA October 7, 8 and 9.  Gary Helwig will be demonstrating our WigJig Tools in the Soft Flex Booth.  If you are able to attend the show, please stop by and say hello.  You can find information on the show here and directions to the show here.  Remember we will be in the Soft Flex Booth.  You won't see us under the name WigJig.

Close up of Clasp for Freshwater Pearl Necklace Jewelry Making ProjectWith every newsletter we provide a new jewelry design from WigJig University to spur the creative juices.  The new design for this newsletter is the design for the Freshwater Pearl Necklace shown at right.  This necklace uses one of our new 16" Freshwater Pearl Necklace Jewelry Making Project Close-up.strands of Grade B freshwater Freshwater Pearl Necklace Jewelry Making Project Made with Seed and Bugle Beadspearls in the 5.5 to 6mm size, 2x4mm bugle beads, and size 11 crystal S/L seed beads along with a clasp made on our WigJig tools.  The clasp can be made with our WigJig Olympus, Olympus Lite, Delphi or Centaur and requires two 3/16" Super Pegs and six inches of 18 or 20 gauge wire.  The necklace is strung on 28-30 inches of size .024 Soft Flex and finished with four 2x2mm crimp beads.

This necklace was make with white freshwater pearls and black 2x4mm bugle beads.  We suggest considering all colors of the bugle beads with the white freshwater pearls.  Other colors of pearls could also be used with the crystal S/L or gold S/L bugle beads.

Jewelry Stand for Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectThis week, we are getting ready for our visit to the Lapidary Earring Jewelry Stand Jewelry Making ProjectJournal Bead Fest on October 7, 8, and 9.  For us, attending these shows means packing our jewelry items for traveling along with the display stands to hold those jewelry items.  In the past, packing the displays for the jewelry was always difficult.  The displays tend to be large, rather bulky, and in odd Earring Jewelry Stand for Traveling Jewelry Making Project Folded Flatshapes so that they do not easily fit into a suitcase.  This caused us to put on our thinking caps and develop a new jewelry stand that would fold flat.

The stand shown here is for display of earrings and could also be used to display bracelets.  It is about 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall.  The basic stand is made with 12 gauge wire on our WigJig Olympus.  24 Gauge wire was used to make the small loops for hanging the earrings.

Admittedly this stand looks hand made.  The next time we make this stand it will look slightly less hand made as we learn to do a better job making the stand.  Fortunately, we don't think that looking hand made is necessarily a bad thing.  When you are displaying jewelry this stands sends an unstated message -- this jewelry is hand made.  Since this stand is not something that people see every day, perhaps some people will stop to see how the stand was made and end up looking at the jewelry.  Perhaps in this case, imperfection is perfect. We'll know better on October 10th after we get home from the Bead Fest.
