WigJig News:
Thank you to everyone who stopped by the bead show in
Tucson and said hello. It is always a pleasure to meet the readers of
our newsletter. Hopefully, seeing
some of the jewelry pieces from our web site close-up will
have made the trip worthwhile for everyone.
This week we have a bracelet design contributed by Staci Egan of State College, PA. Staci makes jewelry in her home studio and sells this jewelry in galleries, boutiques and juried art shows. You can view more of Staci's jewelry designs and visit her web site here. For information on this bracelet design you can contact Staci at staciegan@adelphia.net. We want to thank Staci for taking the time to be our Guest Contributor for this week. Designs that Sell:
We understand that many of the subscribers to our
newsletter are selling jewelry made using
During our discussions in Tucson, we learned that some people are selling our Square Earrings at craft shows for prices up to $18 each. Our discussions in Tucson also confirmed that our Money Earrings remain perhaps our most popular designs. |

Free Jewelry
Design: With every newsletter
we provide a new jewelry design
from WigJig University
to spur the creative juices. The new design for this newsletter is
the design for the Lisa's Earrings and Pendant shown here. This is
a design that was developed during idle time at the Tucson Gem and
Jewelry show. The earrings were made for one of our favorite
earrings models, Lisa Vernon, hence the name. Lisa likes larger
and bolder earring designs. The pendant shown at right is a longer
version of the earrings. The earrings shown here hang almost
2 1/2" below the bottom of the ear wire finding. The pendant hangs
almost 3 1/2" below the chain of the necklace.
The beads used in this project were 16mm long and could have been as
large as 18 or 19mm and would have worked, making this an ideal way to
highlight larger beads.
These pieces can be made on any of our WigJig tools using one regular metal peg and one 7/8" Super Peg (from our set of three Large Round Super Pegs) or they can be made with one regular metal peg and the Spiral Maker for that jig (also 7/8" in diameter). This design is an advanced beginners design. The chain for the pendant was made of 18 to 24 inches of regular commercial chain, with a clasp connected to either end using the wrapped bead link technique discussed here.

Given the above introduction to frame the problem, the question is how do you avoid leaving tool marks on wire components made on one of our WigJig tools. The answer to this question is relatively simple -- use either Step Jaw Pliers, shown above-right, or round-flat pliers shown above-left to make your initial loops. Please note that both of these pliers have one rounded jaw for making loops and one flat jaw. It is vital that the pliers have the flat jaw, because it is this flat jaw that spreads the gripping force to eliminate the marks on the outside of the loop. Please note that some vendors sell pliers with a concave jaw instead of the flat jaw. We suggest that you avoid those pliers as they leave marks on the wire at the edge of the concave jaw. The next suggestion that we can offer is to never use your round nose pliers for anything but making a loop. Do not use round nose pliers for gripping your wire. Chain nose or bent chain nose pliers with flat smooth jaws are what we use to grip and hold wire. The flat smooth jaws of these pliers spread the gripping force to minimize tool marks. In addition, when gripping wire in your bent chain nose pliers, grip the wire firmly so that it doesn't slip. Frequently tool marks happen when the wire slips while in the grip of one of your tools.
Finally, many beginners start making jewelry with inexpensive tools. This is a natural choice as one wants to learn what is important before spending more money. Some of these inexpensive tools aren't made well and may have sharp edges on the chain nose or bent chain nose pliers. The solution to this is relatively easy and inexpensive -- use a file, to smooth the edges of our chain nose and bent chain nose pliers. The file can be a simple nail file with a fine grain, or it can be a set of jeweler's files. Both will work well. This isn't major surgery, it is merely rounding the edges so that they feel smooth and aren't raised above the rest of the jaw of the pliers. To view more instructions on how to reduce the tool marks on your jewelry wire please select here. To view our Step Jaw Pliers in our Internet store, please select the picture above top-right. To view our round flat pliers, please select the picture above-left. To view our bent closing pliers select the picture above-right. Nostalgia Corner:
