Emerald Gemstone, the Birthstone for MayBirthstone for May:  The birthstone for May is the emerald.  Good quality emeralds are highly valuable for the simple reason that they are very rare.  Emeralds are more susceptible to damage and breakage than diamonds, rubies, sapphires or amethyst and most mined emeralds have inclusions or other imperfections.  Because good quality emeralds are so rare, they are the most valuable gemstone by weight.  Given that emeralds are vulnerable to breakage, they are not a good choice for use in rings.  For the month of May, we have our 8mm emerald cubic zirconia gemstones on sale at 20% off.  This is our item 3121 in our Internet store and a package of two 8mm emerald cubic zirconia gemstones will cost $11.99.

New Items:  We have added four new styles of cubic zirconia (CZ) gemstone pendants to our store since our last newsletter.  You can view the four new styles of pendants below.  Select any picture or name to view those items in our Internet store.

Ovals Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectFree Jewelry Design:
Ovals Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectWith every newsletter we provide a new jewelry design from WigJig University to spur the creative juices.  The new design for this newsletter is the design for the Ovals Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings shown left and right.  These designs are advanced beginners jewelry making projects and can be made on any WigJig jewelry making tool with one regular metal peg and two Super Pegs.  In the earrings shown at right, we used two 1/4" Super Pegs to make the earrings.  In the earrings shown at left, we used one 1/4" Super Peg and one 3/8" Super Peg.  Both earrings were made with 20 gauge soft wire.

The gemstones shown at left are 2x18mm cubic zirconia pendants.  They are not glass.  This is important because glass has the same hardness as dust and can therefore be scratched by dust.  Cubic zirconia (CZs) are much harder than dust and therefore retain their shine better than glass.  You can view these pendants in our Internet store starting here.

Past Techniques:
We maintain a techniques web page that provides links to the discussion of techniques in our prior newsletters.  You can visit this web page here.  Follow the links on that page to the discussion of the technique in that newsletter.

Jewelry Technique:
Wire Wrapping a Shark's ToothSecond View of Wire Wrapping a Shark's ToothThis week's jewelry making technique is a discussion on how to wire wrap a shark's tooth or other triangular shape.  While we don't claim to be the world's foremost experts in the subject of wire wrapping irregular shapes, we have developed a technique that is suitable for advanced beginners to intermediate wire workers to use to wrap a triangular object like a shark's tooth.  This technique is a follow-on project to the wire wrapped pendant project that we described earlier this year and uses the same basic technique to start.

Our technique for making a wire wrapped pendant is described here.  This technique involves making a spiral base with a long central wire using our WigJig Spiral Maker.  We suggest that readers visit our complete instructions for making the wire wrapped pendant to learn how the spiral is Wire Wrapped Pendant Jewelry Making Techniqueconfigured for the bottom of the wrapped stone or other object.  You can view a picture of the back of a wire wrapped object at left. This picture shows the spiral at the bottom and the long central wire of the spiral. This technique needs to be modified for a triangular object like a shark's tooth because the triangular shape won't be stable otherwise.

The way we modify the technique is that instead of wrapping spiral coils of wire from bottom to top of the shark's tooth or other triangular shape, you would wrap the spiral coils 1/2 way up the triangular shape and then wrap the wire around behind the triangular shape Wire Wrapped Shark's Tooth Jewelry Making Techniquehorizontally to the 1/2 way point on the opposite side of the triangle.  In the picture at right, you can view how you would begin with the spiral at the bottom (point 1) and continue wrapping the wire to the 1/2 way point, point 2.  From point 2 to point 3 in the figure, the wire is essentially horizontal, behind the tooth.  At point 3 you change the direction of the wrap to securely hold the top of the shark's tooth and wrap up toward the center of the top of the tooth, point 4.  From point 4 to point 5, the wire is wrapped diagonally, behind the shark's tooth.  The wrap is completed by wrapping the wire from point 5 to point 6.  At point 6 the wire is bent horizontally and wrapped around the middle wire of the spiral, running up the center of the back of the tooth.  After this wrap is completed, the excess wire is cut and the cut end is squeezed flat.  At this point you would have about 1 1/2" of wire remaining from the central wire in the spiral.  This wire is first bent 90 degrees, then a loop is made at the bend and finally the loop is wrapped closed in the same process that we would make a wrapped bead dangle as described here.  Hopefully, these pictures and instructions will make sense.

Nostalgia Corner:
This week's featured design in our Nostalgia Corner is the design for our Lisa's Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings shown here.  This design is similar to our Ovals Earrings that is this week's new project, but is slightly harder to make because of the wire wrapping around itself at the top of the earring body.  This design can be made on any of our WigJig tools and uses one regular metal peg and a 7/8" Super Peg or a Spiral Maker accessory to make the rounded shape at the bottom.

Warning! Joke Follows.
This is only a joke.  We tell jokes because we are in favor of smiling, laughing and being happy.  This does not mean that we are opposed to anyone or anything.

If you have ever in your entire life been offended by any joke  -- please skip the below paragraphs.  It is not our intention to offend anyone!  We don't write these jokes, we only re-tell jokes that we have heard on the public radio, television or over the Internet.

Boomer Humor:

Editorial Note:  In our last newsletter we introduced both Amish Jokes and Taliban Jokes.  We did not receive a single complaint from either a Taliban member or from an Amish person.  We consider this a success so in this newsletter we will have some similar jokes.  The first joke was contributed by Linda Busler, a newsletter subscriber.  It appears that she received the "Amish Virus" in an e-mail.  Here is a copy of the virus e-mail:

Hello There, you English:

You have just received the "Amish Computer Virus."  As we Amish don't have any programming experience, this virus works on the honor system.  Please delete all the files from your hard drive and manually forward this virus to everyone on your mailing list.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Here are a couple of more Taliban jokes:

  • You might be a Taliban if you wipe yourself with your bare left hand, but consider bacon 'unclean'.

  • You might be a Taliban if you were amazed to learn that cell phones have an application other than setting off roadside bombs.

  • You might be a Taliban if you have ever uttered the phrase "I love what you have done with your cave."

  • You might be a Taliban if you have nothing against women and think that every man should have at least one or two.

We are continuing to improve our newsletter, so please feel free to provide feedback at custsrv@wigjig.com
