SpokesDog Boomer for Beads, Jewelry Tools and Jewelry Making Supplies by WigJig Web SiteWigJig News -- AKA Boomer Sez:

Our Spokesdog:  If an insurance company can have a gecko, we have decided that we can have a spokesdog.  Boomer, shown at right, is our spokesdog.  If you select Boomer's picture at right, you will be able to view Boomer at work.

How to Unsubscribe:  If you signed up for our newsletter and then decided you don't want to receive it any more, the proper way to unsubscribe is to select the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of every newsletter e-mail or to follow our sign up link above.  On that sign up page we also provide a way for people to unsubscribe.

Ruby Gemstones for Making JewelryBirthstone for July:  The birthstone for July is the ruby.  Rubies are one of the cardinal gemstones and for this reason, good quality rubies are very rare and very expensive.  Rubies are also the second hardest gemstone,   with a hardness of 9 on the Mohs hardness scale.  Rubies are only slightly less hard than a diamond.  Because of the hardness of rubies they make an excellent choice for all jewelry applications as rubies will retain their polish and shine even when worn extensively.  While high quality mined rubies are very rare and expensive, fortunately, man-made rubies are chemically identical to the mined rubies and are available at very reasonable prices.  You can view our selection of man-made rubies here.

Some people aren't impressed with gemstones that aren't natural.  Unfortunately, 90% of the rubies mined from the earth are "enhanced" artificially to improve their color.  At present, there are no laws that require a jeweler to differentiate between a mined but artificially enhanced ruby from a completely natural, mined  ruby.  Given that the odds are 9 out of 10 that a mined ruby sold in a jewelry store is artificially enhanced, why not just purchase the chemically identical man-made ruby?

New Items:  We added four new gemstones and one new jewelry making book to our Internet store.   New to our Internet store are 8mm amethyst (Item 3411), garnet (Item 3409), citrine (Item 3408)  and peridot (Item 3407).  You can view these new mined from the earth gemstones below.  We also now have the "Wire Jewelry Workshop" book with instructions for making jewelry with wire and beads (Item 3406).  Select the picture or the text below to view these new items in our Internet store.

The "Wire Jewelry Workshop" book has several projects that use our WigJig tools along with some beginners instructions in the basic techniques for making jewelry with wire and beads.  For those of you who aren't comfortable on the Internet, this is an excellent book.

Coping with the High Price of Gold and Silver:  It would not be a news flash to say that gold and sterling silver are very expensive.  In fact, the entire jewelry industry is hurting right now due to these high prices.  Given the high price of precious metals, how should someone selling jewelry cope?  While we don't have all the answers, we can describe how we are coping.  Prior to this year, almost all the jewelry we made was made from gold-filled wire.  The few pieces that weren't gold-filled were sterling silver.  This year by contrast, we are making many pieces of jewelry from brass wire.  While we don't have a complete selection of all the required findings in brass, we have many findings in brass and we are ordering some ear wires and other findings in brass for the future.  Currently, when we need a finding in brass that isn't available, we make it.  In our Techniques section below, we show how we made a standard ear wire out of 20 gauge brass wire.  The bottom line is that while brass isn't gold and definitely isn't as tarnish resistant as gold, you can still make some very attractive jewelry with brass.  We suggest that our readers consider brass as a replacement for gold and gold-filled wire.  This will allow you to make more jewelry at more reasonable prices.

Modified Spiral Link Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectSpiral Link Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings Jewelry Making Project
Free Jewelry Design:
With every newsletter we provide a new jewelry design from WigJig University to spur the creative juices.  The new design for this newsletter is the design for the modified Spiral Link Jewelry Wire and Beads Earrings shown at right.  These earrings are made with a combination of 18 and 20 gauge wire and with two 8mm beads.  Our WigJig Spiral Maker with the associated jig were used to make the spiral dangle wire component that is the main portion of the body of these earrings.  These earrings are rather unique.   The design for the spiral dangle wire component was made so that the component would be strong and wouldn't pull apart accidentally.  This is an advanced beginner's jewelry making project.  Anyone who can make a spiral and a bead dangle will be able to make these earrings.

We maintain a techniques web page that provides links to the discussion of techniques in our prior newsletters.  You can visit this web page here.  Follow the links on that page to the discussion of the technique in that newsletter.  Ear Wire Jewelry Making Finding

Jewelry Technique:
Making a Shepherd's Hook Style Ear Wire Jewelry Making FindingThis week's jewelry making technique are some new instructions for a jewelry making classic the shepherd's hook style of ear wire finding.  You can view this ear wire at right.  We make this ear wire using essentially any WigJig with the associated 5/16" Super Peg and with two regular metal pegs.  The pattern for making this ear wire is shown at left.  The other hand tools required in addition to our WigJig tools and Super Peg are round nose pliers, bent chain nose pliers and a flush cutter.  Very helpful tools to have are a cup bur or bur cup and a hammer and bench block or anvil.  Each ear wire requires about 3 inches of 20 or 21 gauge wire.  We used soft wire to make the ear wire shown.  One good way to save money on your jewelry making hobby is to make your own findings.  The ear wire shown here was made out of 20 gauge brass wire to match the wire in our modified spiral link earrings (above).  Please select either picture above or select here to view our free instructions for making an ear wire jewelry finding.

Nostalgia Corner:Wire Wrapped Chain Jewelry Making Project
This week's featured design in our Nostalgia Corner is the design for our Wire Wrapped Chain shown at right.  This design is a very simple chain, and yet it is also very strong.  The design is made using any of our WigJig tools with two regular metal pegs.  We have instructions for making this chain with wrapped links, which are stronger, or with open links that are easier to make.  The technique used to make this bracelet can be used for any jewelry project that requires chain.  We also provide patterns for making earrings using this chain, and certainly, you could make a longer chain and use it as a necklace.  The bracelet shown here is very simple with just one bead, but the same chain pattern could be used with any combination of 1, 2, or 3 chain links separated by one or more beads.

Please select here, or select the picture at right to view our free instructions for making our wire wrapped chain.

Warning! Joke Follows.
This is only a joke.  We tell jokes because we are in favor of smiling, laughing and being happy.  This does not mean that we are opposed to anyone or anything.

If you have ever in your entire life been offended by any joke  -- please skip the below paragraphs.  It is not our intention to offend anyone!  We don't write these jokes, we only re-tell jokes that we have heard on the public radio, television or over the Internet.

Boomer Humor:

A priest and a rabbi happen to be sitting side by side during a flight.  After briefly reflecting on their respective beliefs, the priest turns to the rabbi and says, "Rabbi, pardon me for asking, but I know that your religion has a prohibition against pork.  Have you ever tested your beliefs and tried pork?"  The rabbi, being an honest man responds "Why yes father, I did try pork once and I am ashamed for allowing my self to be tempted."  The priest nods his head and says "I understand."  Both men sit in quiet contemplation for a while and then the rabbi says "Father, pardon me for asking, but I know that your religion requires priests to be celibate.  Have you ever tested your beliefs and tried sex?"  The priest responds "Why yes rabbi, I did try sex once and I am also ashamed for submitting to temptation."   The rabbi nods quietly and after a minute responds "It's a lot better than a ham sandwich isn't it?"

Boomer's thought for the day:  Some people are like Slinkies.  They aren't really good for anything, but it brings a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.  (Please note that no people were harmed in the telling of this joke and it is just a joke.  Boomer actually likes everyone.)
