Dog Bone Chain Bracelet

Instructions for making the Dob Bone Chain Bracelet out of jewelry wire, beads and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools

Dog Bone Chain Earrings -- Jewelry Making ProjectWhen making chain, we like a design that is aesthetically pleasing, and is strong.  Both strength and an attractive appearance are mandatory.  The chain we will make with these jewelry making instructions meets both criteria.

Link for Dog Bone Chain Jewelry Making ProjectThis chain is based upon a very old chain design that has been called the "Dog Bone Chain".  The ancient dog bone chain is based upon making a wire component that appears like a dog bone.  (See the picture at left.)  In this old design for a chain, the gap in the wire would be soldered closed.  Since we don't do any designs that require soldering, we have modified the design for the dog bone chain so that no soldering is required.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making the Dog Bone Chain Bracelet out of jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry making supplies:

The peg pattern for making this dog bone chain on our WigJig jewelry tools is shown below.  This pattern uses one regular metal peg (peg 1) and two 3/16" Super Pegs (peg 2 and 3).  Our steps for making this chain begin below:

Step 1:  Using nylon jaw pliers, straighten a segment of 22 gauge 1/2 hard jewelry wire 3 1/2" long.

Step 2:  Using your flush cutter, cut the segment of jewelry wire.

Step 3:  Using your fine step jaw pliers, make a 1/2 loop in one end of the jewelry wire.  You won't need to make a full loop because this loop will not be part of the finished wire component.

Step 4:  Position peg 1 and 2 in your WigJig jewelry tool as shown below-left.  Place the loop in the end of your jewelry wire segment on peg 1 as shown.

Step 5:  Wrap the jewelry wire around peg 2 in the pattern on your jewelry making jig as shown below-center.

Step 6:  Add peg 3 to the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 3 as shown below-right.

Step 8:  At this point we need to use our round nose pliers to convert the loops in this wire to eye loops.  This is done by grasping the wire with your round nose pliers slightly on one side of the center of the loop.  See the picture below-left for where to grasp the wire.

Step 9:  While firmly holding the jewelry wire component with your round nose pliers in your non-dominant hand, use your dominant hand to bend the wire between the two loops down as shown below-center.

Step 10:  We need to do the same thing for the loop on the other end.  Grasp the jewelry wire as shown below-right, with the round nose pliers in your non-dominant hand.

Step 12:  Remove the jewelry wire from your pliers and it should appear as shown below-left.

Step 13:  Using your bent chain nose pliers grasp the first of the two larger loops as shown below-center.  You will need to hold this loop firmly while you wrap the initial wire segment around the wire between the two loops.  By holding it with your pliers you preserve the shape of the loop.

Step 14:  Using the thumb on your dominant hand, push the initial jewelry wire segment so that it wraps around about 180 degrees as shown below-right.

Step 15:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire leaving about 1/16" of excess wire as shown at right.

Step 16:  Now we need to squeeze the cut end of the jewelry wire down so that it doesn't stick up.  Use your bent chain nose pliers to squeeze the end of the wire.  You can also use bent closing pliers to squeeze the cut end flat.  When completed, the wire should appear as shown below-left.

Step 17:  Before wrapping the opposite side of the wire component closed, we need to connect this wire component to a prior loop in the chain or to our clasp.  For the first loop in your chain, connect that loop to your clasp.  When making this bracelet, we need to make a segment of chain connected to a clasp with four links, two segments of chain with two links, and one segment of chain with four links.    See the picture below-center for how to connect a link to the clasp or prior link.

Step 18:  At this point we need to bend the loops together.  To start bending the loops together, we need to use our fine step jaw pliers to grasp the wire in the center of the wire segment between the two loops using the first step on your step jaw pliers as shown below-right.  Please note that the wire tail is on the outside of the loops of wire.  This way when the loops are bent together the wire will be on the outside of the loops.

Step 20:  Remove your pliers from the jewelry wire and it should appear as shown below-left.

Step 21:  Using your thumb and forefinger on your dominant hand, squeeze the two loops together as much as possible.  See the picture below-center

Step 22:  Hold the two loops with the thumb and forefinger on your non-dominant hand and using your dominant hand wrap the wire tail around about 1 1/4 times as shown below-right.

Step 26:  Now we need to connect the segments of chain.  Using 22 gauge jewelry wire and three wrapped bead links with three 8mm beads, connect the segments of chain as shown above.  You can find instructions for making the wrapped bead link out of jewelry wire and beads here.  This completes the WigJig Dog Bone Chain bracelet project.

Dog Bone Chain Earrings -- Jewelry Making ProjectYou can view the picture for our Dog Bone Chain earrings at right and below.  To make these earrings we need to make a chain of 3 or 4 links.  The earrings at right used four links, a jump ring and a commercial ear wire.  To make these earrings, make four interconnected links using the procedures described earlier.  At the top of these four links, add a medium jump ring to the top. You can find our instructions for making a jump ring out of jewelry wire here.    Connect the jump ring at the top to your ear wire finding.  Connect a focal bead to the bottom of the last loop in the chain. You can find our instructions for making the spiral head pin out of jewelry wire to connect the bead to the bottom of the chain here.  Use 22 gauge soft jewelry wire to make this spiral head pin.  Please select either picture to navigate to our detailed instructions for making these Dog Bone Chain earrings.

WigJig Dog Bone Chain Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectYou can also make a necklace using this same WigJig Dog Bone Chain.  To make a necklace you would just expand upon the bracelet design.  With the bracelet design you made two links of chain, each two links long.  For a necklace, you would need to make a total of 10 lengths of chain with two links each.  This would require eleven 8mm beads and would make a necklace that was about 19 inches long.

We hope that you like these designs.

Instructions for making Alternative Configuration of Dog Bone Chain using WigJig jewelry tools:

Above you can view a newer version of the Dog Bone Chain. This version was made using 1/2 inch Super Pegs and is bolder, and larger than our earlier designs. Our instructions for making this Dog Bone Chain begin below.

Step 1:  Straighten a segment of 18 gauge jewelry wire using your nylon jaw pliers.

Step 2:  Cut the jewelry wire to a length of 5 3/4 inches long.

Step 3:  Make a partial loop in one end of the wire using your fine step jaw pliers or your round nose pliers
Make the loop large enough that it fits comfortable on the regular metal peg for your jig.
This loop will ultimately be cut off the finished wire component and it will be easier in a later step
if the loop isn't completely closed.

Step 4:  Position one regular metal peg and two 1/2 inch Super Pegs in your jig as shown below-left.
Place your initial loop on peg 1 and wrap the wire around peg 2 and 3 as shown.
The pattern shown is for the WigJig Delphi or Centaur.  If you have a different jig, place the two
Super Pegs, peg 2 and 3,in your jig about 5/16 inch to 3/8 inch apart.  Place peg 1 about 1/2 inch from peg 2.

Step 5:  Remove your jewelry wire from your WigJig jewelry tool.  The wire component should appear as shown below-center.

Step 6:  Using your round nose pliers, convert the large "P" loops made on pegs 2 and 3 into eye loops.
Our free instructions for converting P loops to eye loops can be viewed here.  When completed, your jewelry wire component should appear as shown below-right.

Step 7 to instructions for making Newest Dog Bone Chain Bracelet using common jewelry supplies.Step 7:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire on the loop made on Peg 3 in the pattern on your WigJig jewelry tool.  Cut the jewelry wire so that there is no overlaping wire on this loop.  See the picture at right for how the wire component should appear after cutting the excess wire.

Step 8:  Now we are ready to thread this new chain component onto the rest of the chain.  As you begin your chain, first you would thread this wire component onto the clasp.  After you have added the first link to the chain, the remaining links would be threaded onto the prior link.  Whether you are connecting to the clasp or the prior link in the chain, start by threading the hole in the prior component until it rests in the middle of the dog bone chain component under construction as shown below-left.

Step 9:  Grasp the link under construction in the middle of the link using the middle step on your Fine Step Jaw Pliers.  See the picture below center.  Please note that we are grasping the component under construction with the initial wire segment from peg 1 to peg 2 below the rest of the wire.  By doing this, that wire segment will be on the outside as we bend both ends of the link together in the next step.

Step 10:  Bend both sides of the link under constructions up and together until the loops on either end are aligned with one another as shown below-right.

Step 11 to instructions for making Alternative Dog Bone Chain Bracelet by shaping jewelry wire on jewelry tools.Step 11:  Using your fingers, hold the two loops in this jewelry wire component firmly so that they remain super-imposed, one on top of the other.  While holding firmly, wrap the jewelry wire tail and initial loop around 1 1/2 times as shown at right.

Step 12:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire.  Using your bent chain nose pliers, squeeze and twist the cut end of the wire until it lays flat.  See the picture below-left.

Step 13:  At this point you are almost done; however, it is likely that the clasp will not be oriented properly.  To correctly orientate the clasp, you will need to grasp the link in the chain that connects to the clasp, immediately adjacent to the wrapped wire, with your chain nose or bent chain nose pliers.  Hold your pliers firmly and bend the loop 90 degrees until the clasp is aligned properly as shown below-center.

Step 14:  You can add beads to this link as shown below-right.    For the bracelet shown here, we used 20 gauge wire and 8mm beads to add the beads to this bracelet.  Please select here to view our instructions for adding beads to a round link like this one.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

The dog bone chain is a classic handmade chain design -- it has been around for hundreds and perhaps thousands of years.  We adapted this design to allow it to be made consistently and repeatedly using our WigJig jewelry tools and accessories.  We like this chain because it is strong, can be made consistently, and is unique.
