Instructions for making the Square Knot Bracelet out of jewelry wire, beads and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

Square Knot Bracelet made with onyx beads, jewelry wire and common jewelry supplies.

Bracelet Design:

Close up of Square Knot Bracelet made using WigJig jewelry making tools. The peg pattern for the Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet Jewelry Making Project uses a regular metal peg and a 3/16" Super Peg, pegs 1 and 2 shown below.  This is the smaller peg pattern for making the square knot wire component.  To make the square knot link for the bracelet, we use ten 2 1/8" segments of 20 gauge jewelry wire.  Half-hard jewelry wire will work best for making this piece.  We also need a commercial clasp and six 6mm beads.  Onyx beads were chosen for this bracelet, because we wanted to emphasize the square knot link and not the beads themselves.  Step-by-step instructions for making the bracelet begin below.

Jewelry Making Supplies:

Jewelry Making Tools:

  • Flush cutter
  • Round nose pliers
  • Bent chain nose pliers
  • Nylon jaw pliers
  • Step jaw pliers (Optional)
  • Any WigJig jewelry tool
  • 3/16" Super Peg for your jewelry making jig

Jewelry Making Skills Required:

Step-by-Step Jewelry Making Instructions for Making the Square Knot Bracelet using WigJig jewelry tools:

Step 1:  Using your flush cutter, cut 10 segments of 20 gauge jewelry wire, each 2 1/8 to 2 1/4" long.  (Half hard jewelry wire is preferred if available.)Step 2 to instructions for making the Square Knot Bracelet using common jewelry making supplies.

Step 2:  Using your bent chain nose pliers,  grasp the jewelry wire about 5/8" from one end and make a 90 degree bend in each segment of wire.  Step 3 to instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet using WigJig jewelry making tools.

Step 3:  Using your round nose pliers, make a loop in the jewelry wire as near the bend as possible.  Once you have completed the loop, adjust the position of the loop so that it is centered above the long wire tail.  This is done by placing your round nose pliers inside the loop all the way and bending the loop left or right as required until is it centered.  Instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet using jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies -- Step 4

Step 4:  Now we are ready to wrap this loop closed.  Grasp the loop firmly with your bent chain nose pliers.  This preserves the round shape of the loop while you wrap.  While grasping the loop, bend the short wire tail back 180 degrees.

Step 5 to instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet out of jewelry wire and beads using WigJig jewelry tools. Step 5:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire about 1/8" from the point where the wire crosses over the long wire segment.  Then squeeze the cut end flat.  This is done while holding the loop in one pair of bent chain nose pliers while you squeeze the cut end flat with another pair of pliers.

Step 6 To instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet showing shaping jewelry wire on WigJig jewelry tool.Step 6:  Now we are ready to shape the jewelry wire on our WigJig jewelry tool.  Position a regular metal peg, peg 1, and a 3/16" Super Peg, peg 2 in your jewelry making jig as shown at left.  Place your initial loop on peg 1 and wrap the wire around peg 2.  Continue wrapping until with no pressure applied the wire remains in the position shown at right.

Step 7:  Remove the wire from your jewelry making jig.  Grasp the jewelry wire as shown below-left with your bent chain nose pliers.  Bend the end of the wire to the left.  After bending the jewelry wire, your wire should appear as shown below-center.  Now we are ready to wrap this figure closed.

Step 9:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire leaving about 1/8" of wire.  Step 10 to instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet out of common jewelry supplies.

Step 10:  After cutting the excess wire grasp the jewelry wire component with one pair of bent chain nose pliers and while holding the wire component use a second pair of chain nose pliers to squeeze the cut end flat.

Instructions for making Onyx Beads Square Knot Bracelet Step 11 showing final shape of jewelry wire component.Step 11:  In order to make it possible to connect one teardrop wire component to another, you will need to bend the bottom of the teardrop.  To make this bend, use your step jaw pliers and grasp the wire component about 3/16" from the bottom of the teardrop.  While holding the component tightly in the jaws of your step jaw pliers, bend the bottom of the teardrop up about 45 degrees.  The more you bend the bottom of the teardrop, the easier it will be to connect two teardrop components in the square knot link.  While you are making your practice teardrop start by bending more rather than less so you can easily connect two teardrops.  Make a total of 10 of these teardrop wire components using the instructions in step 1-11.

Step 12:  Now we are ready to connect 5 pairs of teardrop wire components into five square knot links.  See the four pictures below for the steps in connecting two teardrop wire components.  When you get to the position shown in the third picture from the left, below, you will need to use your nylon jaw pliers to squeeze the two wire components and flatten them.  This squeezing and flattening sets the square knot wire shape and makes it permanent.

Step 13:  At this point we are ready to assemble the bracelet.  Connect two square knot links together using a 6mm bead and 21 or 22 gauge jewelry wire to make a wrapped bead link.  Continue connecting the square knot wire components using 6mm beads.  Ultimately, you will have five square knot wire components connected by four wrapped bead links.

Step 14:  You are ready to connect your commercial clasp to either end of your square knot chain.  Use 6mm beads and the wrapped bead link as you did in step 13 to connect the clasp to the chain you have made.  You can use one end of the wrapped bead link as the catch for your commercial clasp.  If you decide to do this, just make that loop in the wrapped bead link larger than you would normally.

Alternative Design for Square Knot Beaded Bracelet made with amethyst beads and common jewelry supplies.

ALTERNATIVE JEWELRY MAKING DESIGN USING WIGJIG JEWELRY TOOLS:

The design shown at right uses four 8mm Swarovski amethyst beads and two 4mm Swarovski amethyst beads instead of the six 6mm beads used above.  The steps involved in making this bracelet are essentially the same as the 14 steps described above with the only exception being that the beads used to connect the five square knot wire components are 8mm beads and the beads used to connect the commercial clasp to the chain are 4mm beads.  In the case of this bracelet, since we used a filigree clasp which is not as stable as the lobster clasp used in the first bracelet, we used a 3" guard chain connected to either side of the clasp just in case the clasp should open accidentally.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

Our Square Knot jewelry wire component is a little magical.  Most people have a hard time understanding how we can make this rather complex appearing wire component without reading these instructions.  The reality is that this is an easy jewelry wire component to make and the resulting bracelet is both complex and attractive.  We suggest that you consider making matching earrings and a necklace.  Astound your friends.  They won't be able to figure out how you made this bracelet.
