Watch with Ruby Bling Jewelry Making Project

Step-by-step instructions for making Watches with Gemstones  using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies:

We begin this jewelry making project by attaching the gemstones and findings to either side of the watch face so that we will have a loop on either end of the watch face.

Step 1:  Using 8mm gemstones and the 8mm round silver, bezelSetting a Gemstone for Beads & Gemstones Watches Jewelry Making Projectfinding, part number 3194, position the two findings upside down on a table or cutting board.  Place the two gemstones in the center of the finding, face down, and push slightly so that the gemstone falls to the bottom of the finding.

Step 2:  Now we need to bend the four tabs in the finding down to hold the gemstone in place.  Pick up the finding and gemstone and hold the gemstone in position in the finding with your thumb of your non-dominant hand on the point of the gemstone.  Using your bent chain nose pliers, bend first tab 1, then 3 down, followed by 2 then 4.  When all four tabs  have been bent down, go back to each tab and using your pliers make sure that they are down securely holding the gemstone.

Step 3:  Now that we have set our gemstones, we need to use wire to attach the gemstones to either side of the watch.  First cut two segments of 20 or 22 gauge 1/2 hard wire each about 3 1/2 inches long.  For beginners, 22 gauge will be easier to work with.

Step 4:  Straighten both segments of wire using your nylon jaw pliers by pulling the wire repeatedly through the jaws of the pliers. Step 5 to Bling Gemstones and Beads Watch Jewelry Making Project

Step 5:  Grasp each of the wire segments in turn about 1 1/4" from the end in your bent chain nose pliers and make a right angle bend.  Slide the long side of the wire into one of the loops on the end of your watch face.  (For this watch we used watch part number 3229.  When in position with the right angle bend tightly against the watch, bend the other end of your wire segment 90 degrees so that the wire ends up as shown at right.  You will have a short wire segment and a long wire segment. Step 6 to Gemstone and Beads Watch Jewlery Making Project showing jewelry wire connected to watch

Step 6:  Position your watch face, face down on a table or cutting board.  Slide your bezel setting with gemstone also face down into position as shown at left.  Slide the setting until it is immediately adjacent to your watch face.

Step 7 to Gemstones & Beads Watch Jewelry Making Project Step 7:  Obviously, the wire holds the setting for the gemstone in place.  The wire must be bent around the gemstone and outside the finding must be bent to hold the finding in place.  Using your bent chain nose pliers, grasp the wire inside the bezel finding and bend the wire as shown at left.  Your goal is two fold.  First, the long wire needs to be bent to that it can be straightened and will be centered on the middle of the setting.  Second, the shorter wire needs to be bent so that it will be perpendicular to the long wire so that it can be Step 8 to Beads & Gemstones Watch Jewelry Making Projectwrapped around the long wire.

Step 8:   When you have both wires positioned correctly, wrap the shorter wire around the longer wire one full wrap.  At this point the long wire should point directly Step 9 to Beads & Gemstone Watch Jewelry Making Projectaway from the center of the finding and the middle of the watch.

Step 9:  Cut the excess wire and using your bent chain nose pliers, squeeze the cut end flat.

Step 10 to Gemstones and Beads Watch Jewelry Making Project showing jewelry wire to connect gemstone to watch face.Step 10:  Now we  need to add a wrapped loop at the end of the wire.  This is done with your round nose pliers just like you would for making bead dangle.  You first make a 90 degree bend in the wire using your bent chain nose pliers, then you use your round nose pliers to make a relatively small loop at the bend.  Finally, you grasp the loop you just made in your bent chain nose pliers and while holding that loop, you wrap the wire around the wire coming from the watch face about 2 times.  Cut the excess wire and using your bent chain nose pliers squeeze the cut end flat.  Do steps 6 through 10 on both ends of your watch face. Step 11 to Gemstone and Beads Watch Jewelry Making Project showing beadstring wire and beads.

Step 11:  Now you are ready to string your beads.  For the watch shown at right, 10 inches of Soft Touch, size .010 or .014 doubled were used on each side of the watch.  It is not necessary to double the Soft Touch, but being fanatical about strength in jewelry this is what we do.  The 10 inch segment of Soft Touch was folded in half.  At the mid-point, the end of the Soft Touch was threaded through one of the end loops in the watch face.  Once enough Soft Flex was through the loop the opposite end of the two strands of Soft Touch was threaded through the loop created by the mid-point of the wire.  Then the Soft Touch was pulled tight.  A single crimp bead was used to hold that end of the Soft Touch.  For details on using crimping pliers and crimp beads, please visit here.

With the Soft Touch bead stringing wire in place, you now need to thread a combination of beads onto the Soft Touch.  Your goal is that the distance from the center of the watch to the end of the clasp on that side of the watch should be 3 3/4" for a standard 7 1/2" watchband.  For an 8" watchband use 4" per side.  6mm beads separated by size 11 S/L seed beads work well.  In the above watch band a combination of ruby red beads and crystal A/B beads were used to match the watch face and gemstones.

The clasp used above is a 6mm sterling silver magnetic clasp (Item 0339).  When using a magnetic clasp it is almost mandatory that you also incorporate a 3" guard chain.  At the end of the beads were strung two 2x2mm crimp beads, the guard chain, then the clasp and finally both strands of Soft Touch were threaded back through the two crimp beads and the first regular bead.  The slack was carefully removed from the Soft Touch and when everything was in position, the two crimp beads were squeezed closed one at a time using the bead crimping pliers.

The clasp used above is a 6mm sterling silver magnetic clasp (Item 0339).  When using a magnetic clasp it is almost mandatory that you also incorporate a 3" guard chain.  Once all the beads were strung on the Soft Touch, we strung two 2x2mm crimp beads, the end link on our 3" guard chain, then the clasp and finally both strands of Soft Touch were threaded back through the two crimp beads and the first regular bead.  The slack was carefully removed from the Soft Touch and when everything was in position, the two crimp beads were squeezed closed one at a time using the bead crimping pliers.  Complete the same process on the opposite side of the watch.  Now turn the watch over and admire your work.Alternative Beads & Gemstones Watch Jewelry Making Project  It may not be Rolex, but who has seen a Rolex with two 2 carat rubies on either side?

Alternative Designs for making watches with gemstones using jewelry wire and beadstringing wire with common jewelry tools:

In this alternative configuration, a bead is Alternative Configuration for Beads & Gemstones Watch Jewelry Making Projectadded after step 9, but before step 10.  With the watch in the stage shown at left, the bead was threaded on the wire and then the wrapped loop was added.  You can view the finished product at right.  This watch shown was finished using beads strung on Soft Touch.  Another alternative would be to use the same approach of adding a bead but instead of using Soft Touch to make a strand of beads, using wire and beads with the wrapped bead link to complete your watch band.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

Hopefully we have given you some ideas that will make it a little more interesting and more glamorous for you to tell time in the future.  These watch bands are certainly not vanilla and should attract some attention.
