Paper Clip Earrings

The WigJig Store is closed for Summer Holiday and upgrades. Check Back July 10th.

Instructions for making Paper Clip Earrings using jewelry wire, beads, common jewelry supplies and WigJig jewelry tools:

I call these Paper Clip Earrings because they remind me of a pair of earrings that you could make out of a paper clip.  The materials required are 20G 1/2 hard gold-filled or sterling silver jewelry wire, two head pins, two six mm beads and two 2.5mm metal beads.  This design is a very simple jewelry making project.  The earrings are unique, yet elegant.  They are also quite popular because they are so unique.

This is a beginner's jewelry making project.

Step-by-step instructions for making earrings using WigJig jewelry tools, jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies:

Step 1:  Cut and straighten a piece of 20G 1/2 hard gold-filled or sterling silver jewelry wire 3.5 inches long.

Step 2:  Measure 1 1/2 inches from the end of the wire with the flush cut.  Grasp the jewelry wire at this point with your bent chain nose pliers and make a right angle bend as shown at right.

Step 3:  Grasp the jewelry wire at this bend (on the long segment) with your chain nose pliers.  Hold one side of the chain nose pliers flush against the 1 1/2 inch wire segment.  Push the wire down against the opposite side of the chain nose pliers.  We are using the width of the chain nose pliers to measure the length of the wire segment between the two bends.  Please note where you held the wire on the pliers so that when you make the next earring, you grasp it in the same place.  When done the jewelry wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 4:  Using your chain nose pliers, grasp the jewelry wire at the top, where it will ultimately go through the pierced ear, about 1/8 inch from the top.  Be sure to hold your chain nose pliers on the two wire ends near the top.  Bend both wire segments about 45 degrees.  See the picture at right for how the wire should appear.  Please note that the jewelry wire for step 4 is held in the picture at right angles to the picture above for step 3.

Step 5:   Now position a WigJig Spiral Maker tool or a 7/8th inch Super Peg (from Large Round Super Pegs Set) in your WigJig jewelry tool.  Position a single metal peg near the Super Peg.  You should be able to use any WigJig jewelry tool.  (The pattern shown at right uses the WigJig Cyclops jewelry too.)  With the pegs set as shown, position the small bend that you just made at the top of the wire so that it hooks behind the single metal peg and bend the wire around the Super Peg.  The last 1/2 inch of the longer leg of the wire should not be bent.

Step 5A:  To help harden the jewelry wire, it will be a good idea to remove the Spiral Maker and wire from your jig and hammer the wire against the Spiral Maker with a nylon or rawhide hammer.  This sets the design and helps to convince the wire to assume the round shape of the Spiral Maker.  Setting the spiral maker on a cutting board while hammering your wire against the opposite side of the Spiral Maker will help.

Step 6:  Remove the wire from the WigJig jewelry tool.  Grasp the jewelry wire with your chain nose pliers on the longer segment of the wire and even with the end of the other segment.  Bend this wire segment back about 90 degrees.  The wire should appear as shown at right.

Step 7:  Now, using your round nose pliers, make a loop in the jewelry wire.  You can make either a normal "eye" loop, or a wrapped loop.  Make sure that the loop is centered on the wire as shown at right.  Cut off any excess wire.

Step 8:  Thread a 6mm crystal bead and a 2 or 2.5mm metal bead onto a head-pin.  Make a bead dangle with these beads and head-pin and connect the bead dangle to the loop in the ear wire you just made.

Step 9:  Using a nail file or Cup Bur, smooth the end of the wire where it will go through the ear.  Now you have a Paper Clip earring.  Use the same steps to make a second earring.  Make sure that your two earrings are mirror images of one another so that they are both orientated in the same manner when worn.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

This is an earring design that is interesting and gets noticed.  It is also a design that stays on well.  If you have some interesting glass beads like the Swarovski crystal beads shown above, you can make a very attractive earring that people won't have seen before.  We recommend this design.  They do get noticed.
