Instructions for making 30 Degree Spiral Wire Earrings out of jewelry wire, beads and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

30 Spiral Earrings made on WigJig jewelry tools using beads and common jewelry making supplies.30 Degree Spiral Earrings made out of jewelry wire, beads and common jewelry supplies.
We call these earrings 30 Degree Wire Spiral earrings because the pattern for the main portion of the body of the earrings is made on the 30 degree radials on a WigJig jewelry tool with a round peg pattern like our WigJig Cyclops or Centaur tools, and the top of the main portion of the body is a spiral made out of jewelry wire.  This is an advanced beginner's jewelry making project.

We made a similar earring and displayed it along with a lot of other jewelry at the International Gem and Jewelry Show in Tucson, AZ, and the earrings received lots of positive comments.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making the 30 Degree Spiral Wire Component out of jewelry wire using WigJig jewelry tools:

There are two wire components that we need to make for the body of these earrings.  The main, largest component is the 30 Degree Spiral component that is made using pegs 1 through 7 on our WigJig Centaur jewelry tool.  The second component is the top wire component that is made using pegs 8, 9, and 10.  The steps involved in making these earrings are described below starting with making the 30 Degree Spiral wire component.

Step 1:  Using your flush cutter, cut two segments of 18 gauge soft jewelry wire each 7" long.  Cut two segments of 18 gauge wire each 2 3/4" long.

Step 2:  Using your fine step jaw pliers, make a partial loop in the end of each segment of jewelry wire.  Because this loop is ultimately going to be cut off each wire segment, it does not need to be a complete loop.  See the loop in the picture below-left.

Step 3:  Grasp each segment by the loop, one at a time, and straighten the jewelry wire by pulling it repeatedly through the jaws of your nylon jaw pliers.

Step 4:  The peg pattern for making the 30 Degree Spiral Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings is as shown on our WigJig Centaur jewelry tool above-right.  Start by placing pegs 1 and 2 in your pattern.  Place your initial loop from one of the 7" segments of wire on peg 1 and wrap the wire around peg 2 as shown below-left.

Step 5:  Remove your wire from your WigJig jewelry tool.  We are going to flip this wire component over after each wrap around a peg.  Now we need to add peg 3 to our pattern on your jewelry making jig and move peg 1.  Notice the placement of the pegs as shown below-center.  Replace your wire on the WigJig jewelry tool, with the initial loop on peg 1 and the second loop now on peg 3.  Wrap your wire around peg two as shown.  Because we are going to flip the wire component over after each step, all the loops will be made on the even numbered pegs.

Step 6:  Remove the wire component from your WigJig jewelry tool.  Reposition peg 1 as shown at right.  Replace the wire component on your jewelry making jig and wrap the wire around peg 4 as shown below-right.

Step 7 Step 8 Step 9

Step 10:  Remove the wire component from your WigJig jewelry tool.  Flatten and harden the component by repeatedly squeezing it in the jaws of your nylon jaw pliers.  Change the orientation of your pliers as you squeeze so that you can flatten the entire component.  At this point the jewelry wire component should appear as shown below-left.

Step 11:  First, use your flushcutter to cut off the partial initial loop, then use your round nose pliers to make a loop at the bottom, center of the wire component as shown below-center.

Step 12:  Now we need to make the small spiral at the top of this component.  We are going to make this spiral using our WigJig Spiral Maker tool so that we won't have any tool marks on the spiral.  The first step in making the spiral is to make a 90 degree bend in the end of the wire.  You need to make this bend about 1/2" from the end of the wire as shown below-right.

Step 12 to instructions for making 30 Degree Spiral Earrings showing using common jewelry tools to shape jewelry wire.
Step 10 Step 11 Step 12

Step 13:  The next step in making the spiral is to use your round nose pliers to make a 180 degree bend immediately adjacent to the 90 degree bend you made in step 12.  This 180 degree bend is on the long wire segment and forms the beginning of the spiral.  (This step is not mandatory, but helps to make the center of the spiral as rounded as possible.)  You can view the jewelry wire after the 180 degree bend has been made below-left.  The 1/2" 90 degree bend does not show in this picture other than as a single point because that short segment of wire is pointing toward the camera.

Step 14:  Place the short, 1/2" segment of jewelry wire into one of the holes on the Spiral Maker tool and place the peg in the Spiral Maker into one of the holes in your WigJig jewelry tool.  Now make a spiral.   Steps for making a spiral with the SpiralMaker can be found here and here.  You will need to finish the spiral by holding the spiral in your bent chain nose pliers, and slowly adding to the spiral by bending the wire.  When you have completed the spiral, use your flush cutters to cut the center post off the spiral.  At this point, your 30 Degree Spiral wire component should appear as shown below-right.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Making the Top Wire Component on WigJig jewelry tools:

Step 15:  Now we are ready to make the top wire component for these earrings.  Begin by placing pegs 8 and 9 in your WigJig jewelry tool as shown at right.  Place the initial loop from one of the 2 3/4" jewelry wire segments on peg 8 and wrap the wire completely around peg 9, so that the wire rests adjacent to the empty hole for peg 10, with no pressure applied to the wire.

Step 16:  Add peg 10 to your WigJig jewelry tool and wrap the jewelry wire around peg 10 as shown below-center.

Step 17:  Remove the jewelry wire from your jewelry making jig.  Using your nylon jaw pliers, squeeze the wire where it made a loop around peg 9 to flatten the wire component.  Your wire component should appear as shown below-right.

Step 18:  Using your flush cutter, cut the excess jewelry wire at the point where it starts to overlap.  After cutting the wire, use your bent chain nose pliers to close the final loop in the top wire component.  See what your wire should look like below-left.

Step 19:  Using your round nose pliers, convert both "P" loops at the bottom of the component to eye loops.  When completed your top wire component should appear as shown below-center.

Step 20:  The final step in making the top wire component is to grasp each of the eye loops that you made in step 19, one at a time and rotate them 90 degrees.  Rotate one 90 degrees clockwise and the other 90 degrees counter-clockwise so that the openings on both loops are on the same side of the top wire component.  When completed your top wire component should appear as shown below-right.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Assembly of the Earring:

Step 21:  Now we are ready to connect the top wire component to the 30 Degree Spiral wire component.  Using your bent chain nose pliers, open both loops at the bottom of the top wire component.  Connect one side of the top wire component to one side of the 30 Degree Spiral wire component and then close that loop.  Then connect the remaining loop to the opposite side of the 30 Degree Spiral wire component and close that loop.  When both sides of both wire components are connected, your earring body should appear as shown below-left.

Step 22:  At this point you can add your commercial ear wire to the top of the earring body.  In order to connect between a standard commercial ear wire and your earring body, you will need to modified Figure 8 connector out of 1 1/4" of 20 gauge jewelry wire.

Step 23:  The final step in making these earrings is to attach either one or three bead dangles made from common jewelry supplies to the bottom of the earrings.  You can attach the bead dangle using an open loop as described here, or with a wrapped loop as described here.  In the earrings shown at left, we used the wrapped loop to attach three bead dangles.  The bead dangles were threaded onto 2" head pins with a combination of three 6mm round Swarovski Crystal beads and two 2x4mm bugle beads.  The bugle beads are Item 1883, Crystal Silver Lined bugle beads.  The Swarovski, round, 6mm beads are Item 2795, Crystal AB 25 faceted round beads and Item 2805, Sapphire 25 faceted round beads.  The crystal AB beads are partially mirrored and do a great job of reflecting light in low light conditions.  The sapphire beads are brightly colored and look great in daylight or strong light.  The combination of the two beads makes these earrings really stand out in either bright light or in low light.

Alternative Design to 30 Degree Spiral Jewelry Wire & Beads Earrings Jewelry Making ProjectAlternative designs for making earrings using WigJig jewelry tools:

One obvious alternative design is to use a single bead dangle instead of three.  Another alternative is to wrap the jewelry wire on the top wire component inside peg 9 instead of completely around the outside.  (See step 15 above.)  You can view an example of both of these alternatives at right.

Another alternative to consider is to make two parallel rows of pegs on one of our square jigs and make a bracelet component.  This bracelet component could appear as shown at left.  Or we could make this bracelet wider and incorporate a spiral on either end.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

Making this jewelry wire component is not easy because of the technique we use to keep the wire flatter, by flipping the design over after making each loop on our WigJig jewelry tool.  If you haven't done this before, you should make this wire component both with and without flipping it over after each loop on your jewelry making jig.  That way you can determine for yourself whether the extra effort is worth it.  For us, it is always worth it and we always flip designs so that the finished jewelry wire component lays flatter.

In the earrings we made, we used long bead dangles at the bottom of the earrings.  We liked the long chandelier earrings that resulted.  If you want shorter earrings you can make the same earring body but use only one bead in the bead dangles at the bottom of the earring body.
