Multi-Tier Beaded Chandeliers

Instructions for making Multi-Tier Beaded Chandelier Earrings out of jewelry wire, beads, and jewelry supplies using WigJig jewelry tools:

3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project Made with Emerald Beads3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project Made out of common jewelry making supplies.3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project made using WigJig jewelry making tools.3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project Made with Sapphire Beads

We have documented several three tier earring jewelry making designs that used one of our round jigs like the WigJig Cyclops, Electra or Centaur jewelry tools.  To this point we have not shown a three tier design that used a pattern from one of our square jewelry making jigs.  Developing a pattern that would accommodate three tiers on a square jig was not immediately obvious, but was something that we wanted to do, for the simple reason that this three tier earrings design is very popular.

For the emerald earrings on the left we use 16 gauge 1/2 hard round jewelry wire.  For the sapphire earrings above-right, we used 18 gauge 1/2 hard round jewelry wire.  For a beginner or advanced beginner we would suggest using the 18 gauge jewelry wire.  The jewelry supplies required for making these earrings are one pair of ear wire findings (we like lever-back ear wires for these earrings), 20 inches of 18 gauge jewelry wire, 22 inches of 22 gauge jewelry wire, 20 four mm beads, 6 six mm beads, and 26 head pins.

The finished earrings shown here are almost 4 inches from top to bottom.  That probably qualifies them to be called "Shoulder Dusters".  The earrings are made up of four wire components made on either our WigJig Olympus, Olympus-Lite, Delphi or Centaur jewelry tools along with ear wire findings and many, many bead dangles on head-pins.  The four wire components made on the jewelry making jig are the Top wire component, the 5 loop wire component, the 4 loop wire component and the 3 loop wire component.  You can view these wire components in the table below.

3 Tier Beaded Chandelier Earrings Step-by-Step Instructions for Top Wire Component:

Top Wire Component for 3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project

We will begin making these earrings by making the top wire component.  The steps involved in making this wire component follow.

Step 1:  Cut a piece of 18 gauge jewelry wire 2 1/2 inches long.

Step 2:  Using round nose pliers or step jaw pliers, make a loop in the end of this jewelry wire segment with the flush cut.

This completes the four wire components necessary to make these earrings.  Next, we will address how to assemble these wire components into the earrings.

Assembling the 3 Tier Chandelier Earrings:

3 Tier Earrings made with sapphire beads and common jewelry making supplies.

Assembly of Top and 5 Loop Wire Components of the 3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project

Step 30: We are ready to connect the top and five loop wire components of these earrings.  Connect one end of the top wire component to one end of the 5 loop wire component by opening one of the end loops and connecting the two wire components, then closing the loop.  Opening and closing loops is done with your bent chain nose pliers.

Step 31:  To connect the opposite end of the top wire component to the five loop wire component you will need to open both end loops on the five loops wire component and the top wire component.  Once the two wire components are connected, then close both opened loops.

Step 32:  Using a head pin and a 4mm bead, add a bead dangle to the two end loops of the 5 loop wire component.

Step 33:  Using a head pin and a 6mm bead, add a bead dangle to the center loop in the 5 loop wire component.

Step 34:  At this point, we need to connect the 4 loop wire component to the 5 loop wire component.  This is done with 22 gauge jewelry wire, two 4mm beads, and a wire technique called the wrapped bead link.  One at a time, connect the loops made on pegs 5 and 8 in the 5 loop wire component to wrapped bead links.  You can connect these links to the outside loops in the 4 loop wire component by opening the end loops in the 4 loop wire component, connecting to the loop in the wrapped bead link and then closing the loops.

Step 35:  With the 4 loop wire component connected to the 5 loop wire component, we are ready to begin hanging beads from the 4 loop wire component.  Using a head pin and 4mm bead, hang a bead dangle from the two outside loops in the 4 loop wire component.

Step 36:  Now we are ready to add the third tier, the 3 loop wire component.  Just as you connected the 4 loop wire component to the 5 loop wire component with wrapped bead links, we need to connect the center two loops of the 4 loop wire component to the outer two loops on the three loop wire component using 22 gauge wire and 4mm beads.

3 Tier Earrings made with sapphire beads, gold jewelry wire and common jewelry supplies.Step 37:  With the third tier connected we need to add the bead dangles to the bottom of the third tier.  Using a 4mm bead and a head pin, add a bead dangle to the outer two loops of the 3 Loop wire component.

Step 38:  With a 6mm bead and a head pin, add a bead dangle to the bottom loop in the 3 loop wire component.

Step 39:  At this point we need to add the ear wire finding to the top of the earring.  If you used 18 gauge jewelry wire you can directly connect the ear wire finding to the top of the earring body.  If you used 16 gauge jewelry wire, you will probably need to make a modified figure 8 connector to connect the top of the earring body to the ear wire finding.

Step 40:  The last step in making these earrings is to connect the bead dangle to the loop in the top of the Top wire component.  You will need a head pin and a 6mm bead for this bead dangle.  Connecting this bead dangle is more difficult than the other bead dangles because the size of the wire you need to work around at the top of the Top Wire component is larger/thicker than all of the other loops in this earring.  For this reason, we did not make a wrapped loop, but instead made an open loop bead dangle.  The technique for making an open loop in jewelry wire is shown hereThe same technique is shown in our free jewelry making video here.  Make the loop at the top of your bead dangle as large as your round nose pliers can accommodate.  Try to make the bead dangle so that the bead hangs in the center of the opening formed by the Top wire component and the 5 Loop wire component.  When you are done, hold the earring at arms length and admire your finished project.

3 Tier Earrings made on WigJig Delphi jewelry tool using emerald beads.3 Tier Earrings Jewelry Making Project Made on WigJig Cyclops jewelry tool using crystal beads. At this point, let's compare the three tier earrings made on our WigJig Delphi using a square peg pattern with similar earrings made in our WigJig Cyclops jewelry tool using a round peg pattern.  The earrings on the left were made on the WigJig Delphi jewelry tool, or on the square portion of the WigJig Centaur jewelry tool.  The earrings on the right were made on the WigJig Cyclops or the round portion of the WigJig Centaur jewelry tool.  The Top Wire Component could have been made the same on both jewelry making jigs.  The remaining body components are constrained by the geometry of the jewelry making jigs, square versus round.  The differences between the two patterns is most visible when viewing the highest 5 loop wire component on each.  Both have their merits.

Summary of jewelry making instructions:

We have described a lot of options for making multi-tier chandelier earrings using common jewelry supplies and our WigJig jewelry making tools.  We have options using 4mm beads and other options using 6mm beads.  We have options that used 16 gauge, 18 gauge, and 20 gauge jewelry wire for the body components.  We show many different styles of top wire components used to connect the body of the earring to the ear wire finding, and many style of body components.  Some of the patterns we used required a jewelry making jig with a round peg pattern, some of the patterns required a jewelry making jig with a square peg pattern.  There are many more combinations that could be explored.  For now, we are going to move on away from tiered earrings and begin to investigate ways to make a complimentary yoke as a necklace component.  This new necklace jewelry making project can be found here!
