The majority of the jewelry wire sold under the Artistic Wire brand name is vinyl coated copper wire. This wire has a colored vinyl coating over a copper wire core. The vinyl coating can come in a wide variety of colors. The vinyl coating in concept is similar to the insulation on conventional electrical wire. This vinyl coated jewelry wire is manufactured in sizes from 10 gauge to 30 gauge, but our company only sells Artistic Wire in sizes from 10 gauge to 28 gauge. Because the vinyl coating on the wire is soft and can be scraped off, we recommend this wire for making necklaces, for earring bodies, and for home applications. This vinyl coated copper wire is not suitable for making bracelets or rings. Vinyl Coated Artistic Wire will normally have a hardness of soft.
The next most common type of Artistic Wire brand jewelry wire is the silver plated and enamel coated jewelry wire. This wire comes in a variety of colors and because of the silver plating on the wire it will be bright and shiny. Because of the enamel coating on the wire, the bright, shiny color will remain intact and won't tarnish as long as the enamel is in place. Because enamel is relatively soft, this wire is not recommended for making rings or bracelets, but is totally appropriate for making earrings, necklaces and other home applications. Because of the silver content in this wire and the more expensive plating process used to make the wire, silver-plated Artistic Wire is more expensive than all other types of Artistic Wire. Silver-plated Artistic Wire will normally have a hardness of soft.
The brass wire sold by Artistic Wire is sold with an enamel coating to minimize tarnish. This jewelry wire will retain a bright, shiny brass finish as long as the enamel coating remains intact. Brass Artistic Wire will normally have a hardness of ½ hard.
